Year Of Rat : Will Businesses See Success or Plague?




2018: It was early 2018 I decided it was time to become an entrepreneur and move into the bandwagon of start-ups. It has been quite a few years since I had my first thought, this moment where I had reached was After great courage, deliberation and situations motivation coming into a conducive environment (or so I thought). I got into business start-up mode. It was a great beginning. All my detailed planning was perfectly working and aligning to my expectation.
I had all the perfect condition for seeing my start-up vision being born. The brand I created was imaginative. I received expected acceptance across various malls in capital city - Jakarta and few others metro cities like Semarang, Surabaya and Yogyakarta.
Over the months, Sales gradually started going up. All I had to do was keep adding small collections every month and engage the customers directly and indirectly via Social campaign & marketing.

2019: This was the Eelection year in Indonesia. I had heard a popular sentiment; mostly small entrepreneur was expressing Mr. Joko Widodo to loses the election. His tough decisions were causing a series of problems in business operations, so there could be ease of doing business. It was expectation of going back to earlier days (Before 2014) when people use to be their own online system unlikely now a days People are managed by online system.

This was the year when the uncertainty of election loomed high. Fearing new business rules and regulation, customers tied up their hand, Investor stopped investing. There was a strange situation of waiting for election result. It was the peak shopping season. As days passed slowly under our nose sales vanished. Everyone complained, from housewives to businessman; As the results poured in, everyone accepted the changed situation and geared up for new reality.

2020:  YEAR OF RATIn Chinese culture, rats were seen as a sign of wealth and surplus. because of their reproduction rate. It was a hope of great opportunity at our doorstep. We human have an eternal expectation of a hope in the sight of adversity. When we don’t want to give up, we scout all around for hope. So did I. Believing this business would now grow multiple fold, it was time to give another chance.

Well, it’s a beautiful idea which says, if the beginning is good, the journey will be exciting. So, the beginning of the year January-February 2020 actually gave positive result. We did less of hard work and more of smart work. Who could have imagined that it was just the beginning of an unprecedented growth not in form of wealth but a tiny virus COVID-19., Which had derailed all plans and taken a deep dive into the abyss of darkness.

Within all the grim situation, there was an opportunity waiting at the doorstep. Our spirits are going to be re-kindled. We are getting ready for the next opportunity. Every such situation was preparing us to fight more and find new way.


What happened during this LOCK DOWN due to COVID-19?
NEW MARKET – NEW JOB – NEW LEARNING

NEW MARKET: While the world struggled to keep businesses afloat, business houses explored their capacity to respond to the emerging chaos. The demand rose for essentials and hygiene products. A new demand had started to emerge in personal hygiene products and safety gear, such as Face Masks, Coverall (PPE), Hand Sanitizer etc.

Company who made Shoes and Bags started manufacturing medical products. It looked like a profitable venture. All those who could adopt to the change, got into THE NEW” Business. Businessman with resources sensed the opportunity, they bought goods and blocked supply to create demand. Its common knowledge that these goods were sold at a minimum of 2x the actual cost. Best example is SENSI (Indonesian Surgical Mask maker, www.sensi.co.id) which Resellers now sells a piece twice the price. Who says there is not BUSINESS!  

New Trend! Waste to Wealth. Truly SUSTAINABLE?

As I mentioned the big rush of Face Mask was here, being made at an unprecedented speed. There were little regards to safety or hygiene. The products were made out of true waste of apparel manufacturing, leaving safety parameters far behind. The manufacturers were using every single bits and pieces they could find in their warehouse including using Padded Bra Cup which they sold 3D Face Mask.

NEW JOB: We have been approached by many companies to fulfill one of their unexpected requirement: Product Packaging and Campaign Design. This is not a typical job for a brand company, but with the strength of creative designers in-house; we accepted THIS NEW JOB. We found new area of scope while we work from home.
